The Speculations in Sound international research network hosts gatherings of practitioners and scholars working on specific, interrelated issues and challenges in new music. These events are designed to be intentionally open-ended, exploratory, and collaborative, and aim to nurture new questions around conceptual disturbances and to facilitate a practice of speculative thought in new music.

The participants lists are often created to encourage cross-disciplinary exchange and collaboration, including from scholars whose work sits primarily outside of new music (for example in anthropology, sociology, climate science, etc.), as well as contributors from ‘third sector’ organisations.
